In 1956, Oakland psychiatrist Dr. Tim Brady examines an unusual patient: a brilliant young linguist named Mel Randon, a grown man who appears to be a teenage boy, and who claims to be an alien from a distant world called Marltreth. Brady assumes he is treating a gifted schizophrenic.
Within weeks he is abducted, carried into space, and taken to Marltreth itself, a world where juvenile-looking humans share a civilization with intelligent predatory birds, and where a society of philosophers covertly guides the course of history. As he tries to adapt to Marltrethian society and its intrigues, Dr. Brady’s fate may hinge upon whether he can solve the philosopher’s riddle, upon which their control of the planet depends.
